Who Is Carla Unger?

Dr. Carla Unger is a Morse laboratory researcher from Earth-616 who is one of the unfortunate victims that encounters the deadly symbiote. Being assigned to study Carnage when it was sent to her lab by Spider-Man, Carnage eventually enters Carla’s body.

Which Marvel Comic Does Carla Appear In?

Created by Cullen Bunn and Mike Henderson, Carla’s only appearance throughout the extensive of Marvel Comics is in Superior Carnage Vol. 1.

After staying alone in the lab to run tests on the symbiote after hours, Carla takes a tissue sample of the symbiote and places it under a microscope. Whilst looking into the microscope,  she is contacted by her abusive husband, Will, who accuses her of working too late and says she should be back home in the kitchen. Carnage senses Carla’s built up anger and leaps through the glass of the microscope and enters her body through her eye. At this point, Carla incinerates the remaining parts of the sample and returns home.

She is welcomed by an angry Will who continues his stream of rage, threatening Carla as she ignores him looking very unwell. The symbiote taunts her and asks if she’s going to let Will speak to her like this. With one deep breath, she lets go of herself and gives in to Carnage. Carla then responds to her husband with this iconic quote.

“I want you to know something, Will. Everything that’s about to happen… All the nasty things that I’m going to do to you… It’s not the monster making me do it. I’m killing you because I want to. I’ve been married to you for a long time. It’s about time you started bringing me some joy!”

What is A Symbiote?

The Klyntar (Symbiotes) are amorphous extraterrestrial parasites that require a symbiotic connection with a host to create a single entity. They can alter the personality of the host in order to achieve their deepest and darkest desiresSymbiotes also enhance the hosts physical and emotional traits, creating super-human abilities.

The symbiotes were first introduced in 1984 when Spider-Man wore a black costume that gave him enhanced powers. In 1998, writer David Michelinie and artist Todd McFarlane brought Venom to life as the first official symbiote, making them one of the universe’s greatest threats. Since then, Marvel have dived into the history of the alien race and introduced other villains (and allies), including the likes of Knull (the eldritch god of darkness that created the symbiotes), Toxin (the son of Carnage), Anti-Venom, Sleeper, Scream, Grendel, Plague, Lasher, Riot, Phage, Agony, Zzzxx, and many more.

Who Is Carnage?

Carnage is a Symbiote who has had several hosts throughout the Marvel Comic, including Otto Octavius (Spiderman’s nemesis), Ben Reilly (Peter Parker’s clone), Cletus Kasady, and Benjy Parker (Peter Parker’s son). The symbiote found its way onto Carla after having been extracted from its former and favourite host Cletus Kasady.

In the comics, Carnage is said to be one of the most powerful symbiotes in the universe and even has capabilities beyond the mad titan Thanos!

Why Is Carnage Red?

The color scheme of Carnage has been an important staple of the character since his debut in the pages of The Amazing Spider-Man #360 (1991). After Venom broke through the prison cell Eddie Brock was being held in, a small piece of the symbiote was left behind. This small piece bonded to Cletus’ blood through a small cut on his body, giving it its red and black exterior.
