Lord Of The Rings Timeline

Before we get into the Rings Of Power, it’s best introducing those who aren’t familiar with the complex timeline of Middle-earth to the Ages of Arda — the chronicle major events in the history of the franchise. The condensed timeline that many Tolkien aficionados will recognise is composed of four ages: The First Age, The Second Age (nearly 3,500 years long), The Third Age (the “Lord Of the Rings” narrative”), and The Fourth Age (the age of man and the time of peace). This means the “Rings of Power” television series will be told between 3,000 and 6,500 years before Frodo gets the One Ring. The wizards we are all familiar with, Gandalf, Saruman, and Radagast, while all still alive spiritually, won’t be in their wizarding forms.

In 2019, Amazon Prime revealed that the The Rings of Power would be set in the Second Age of Middle-earth.

Instead of revolving around Peter Jackson’s movie trilogy, the series will feature different struggles in Middle-earth’s history — and highlight how the Rings of Power were originally forged. One of the things many us Tolkien fans are excited to see is Sauron’s reign of terror begin in The Second Age. As the creator of the One Ring and the second established Dark Lord in Middle-earth, Sauron wishes to conquer the realm and build an army of loyal followers.

As well as showing Sauron’s rise to power, it will likely feature the epic story of Númenor (a kingdom of men) and the Last Alliance of elves and men.

During the period of The Second Age, we see Sauron rise to power after the defeat of his master Morgoth. This is when he built his fortress in Mordor called Barad-dur (the Dark Tower).
