SDCC Marvel Panel 2022

Last Updated: 11/08/22
Ever since the commencement of Phase Four, Marvel fans have been eagerly awaiting the reveal of Phase Five, which — for the longest time — has been a mystery. Some projects were assumed to be a part of it, such as Blade, Echo, Ironheart, and Agatha: Coven of Chaos, but nothing has been concrete. Until now.

After the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) skipped San Diego Comic-Con for a couple of years in a row, the MCU finally returned to the annual event for the first time since 2019 to lay out what’s next for the universe. We got to take a more in-depth look into what Phase Four has got planned for us. Beyond that, Marvel Studios finally got to the juicy introduction of Phase Five and Phase Six as they continue to rebuild the MCU, following on from the culmination of the Infinity Saga with the Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame (revolving around the mad titan Thanos). Phases Four, Five and Six are already being referred to as The Multiverse Saga. Although we haven’t seen any announcements for Deadpool and a sequel to Shang-Chi, the roster is looking very exciting for the future of Marvel.

If you missed out on the announcements from San Diego Comic Con 2022, Pop In A Box have got you covered with our official SDCC Marvel announcements blog, featuring all the upcoming numbers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

SDCC Marvel Panel 2022

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022)

Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman cannot be replaced, but the legacy he left with the character will live on. Black Panther 2, officially titled Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, will be directed by Ryan Coogler and will hit the cinemas in November 2022. Kevin Feige confirmed that this will also be the final film in Phase Four.

The highly anticipated trailer stole the show with a glimpse into the future of the most advanced nation on Earth and also a glimpse of Namor. Needless to say, the trailer sadly did not star the late Chadwick Boseman, but still showed returning actress and actors Letitia Wright (Shuri), Winston Duke (M’Baku), and Lupia Nyong’o (Nakia). From what we can see, it seems obvious from the opening scene and beautiful vocals of ‘No Woman, No Cry’, that T’Challa’s death is reverberating through Wakanda. Shuri and Queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett) are seen to be walking somberly in what appears to be a funeral procession, with Shuri holding T’Challa’s Black Panther helmet. As discussed on the panel and in previous interviews, Ryan Coogler has said that the film will pay tribute to star Chadwick Boseman throughout the film. It does seem that the film is probably going to inspire a great deal of tears from viewers.

She-Hulk: Attorney At Law (2022)

She-Hulk: Attorney At Law was announced back in 2019 and is to be one of the last few series of Phase Four. We were graced a second trailer of the upcoming Disney+ miniseries at SDCC comic con 2022, which gives us a more in-depth look into Jennifer Walters (portrayed by Tatiana Maslany) as she learns to control her powers and balance her superhero life with her legal career. Although we were showed more exciting and humorous content within the second trailer, what got the fans really screaming was the teaser of Charlie Cox’s Daredevil appearing in the series, following on from his cameo in Spider-Man: No Way Home.  Fortunately for us, we will also be getting more of Daredevil in Phase Five…

The CGI was greatly improved from the first trailer and shows more of Bruce Banner (aka Hulk) helping his cousin.

The show is streaming on Disney+ from Thursday 18th August.

Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania (2023)

Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania will be the first film of Phase Five and the threequel to the popular Ant-Man trilogy. A new trailer for the film debuted at San Diego Comic Con and has definitely caused quite a buzz. Sadly this trailer hasn’t been revealed to the public (yet).

While plot details for Quantumania have not been made available, it is known that the movie will have Kang the Conqueror as its main villain. Kang’s actor Jonathan Majors, who played a version of the character dubbed He Who Remains on Disney+’s Loki, will be an essential figure of Phase Four, Five and Six. He will also be the main villain in an upcoming Avengers film ‘Kang’s Dynasty’.

We also got a brief glimpse of the live-action debut of MODOK (the big-headed cybernetic villain from Marvel Comics). Kevin Feige confirmed on stage after the trailer was shown to the SDCC Marvel audience that it is in fact the big-headed villain. Unfortunately, he didn’t speak on the trailer so no one knows who is actually playing the character.

Crystal Dynamics

Secret Invasion (2023)

Marvel Studios

Secret Invasion, which will be releasing in spring 2023, will officially be the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first Disney+ Original crossover series. Sadly, it hasn’t been made available outside of the SDCC as of yet but appears to be a much darker and exciting thriller. The plot follows Nick Fury as he returns to Earth due to a situation that warrants his “close attention”. Best of all, we get to see the fan-favourite War Machine (portrayed by Don Cheadle) appear in the trailer.

Secret Invasion sees Samuel L Jackson reprise his iconic role as Nick Fury, the former director of SHIELD, leading an investigation into a sect of shape-shifting Skrulls who have infiltrated (and live among) Earth’s human population.

Given it being a “crossover event”, it’s possible that Secret Invasion will be a mini Avengers-style project, with the show intricating various avengers and superheroes. The series will pick up where Captain Marvel (2019) left off in the after credits and tie into the upcoming The Marvels film.

Guardians Of The Galaxy: Vol. 3 (2023)

Marvel Studios

While the trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3 is yet to be released to the general public, those who were lucky enough to attend Marvel’s panel in Hall H were all balling their eyes out. The big news is that the trailer appears to give a focus on Rocket. The internet is already going wild over a leaked “Baby Rocket” appearing in the trailer, which seems to suggest that we’re getting a bit of Rocket backstory in the new movie. We also get to see a new look for Ravager Gamora and a young adult Groot.

Director James Gunn has also mentioned that another major focus of the movie will be the relationship between Gamora and Nebula.

Gunn also introduced the trailer at the event, saying that the third instalment is the definitive “end” to his Guardians story, so get ready to grab the tissues.

When Does Guardians Of The Galaxy 3 Come Out?

The conclusion of the Guardians saga will be released in cinemas in May 2023. We can expect to see Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) struggling over the fact that Gamora (Zoe Saldana) doesn’t share any of the memories of their relationship, and a heartbreaking backstory for Rocket (Bradley Cooper), with scenes showing him as a baby.

We will get to see returning actors and actresses Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax, Karen Gillan as Nebula, Pom Klementieff as Mantis, Sean Gunn as Kraglin, Elizabeth Debicki as Ayesha, Vin Diesel as Groot, and Bradley Cooper as Rocket Raccoon. There have also been new additions to the cast, with Maria Bakalova portraying Cosmo the Spacedog, Chukwudi Iwuji portraying the High Evolutionary, and Will Poulter as Adam Warlock.

Blade (2023)

Since 2019, fans have been waiting patiently for two-time Oscar winner Mahershala Ali to appear in the MCU since he walked on stage at the end of Marvel’s panel to be formally announced as Blade. It’s been a long wait, but finally Mahershala Ali’s solo Blade movie has a release date – November 3 2023. The SDCC Marvel Panel didn’t go into any depth about what to expect from the reboot other than the cast starring Aaron Pierre and Delroy Lindo.

For those that haven’t heard of the eponymous character, he is a supernatural being called a dhampir, a human/vampire hybrid with unique abilities. Blade uses his incredible powers to hunt vampires and other supernatural creatures.

Iron Heart (2023)

Marvel Studios

Marvel showed off its live-action Ironheart in the first trailer for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. We were then shown a standalone series titled Ironheart, which will be a part of Phase Five and releasing in 2023.

Ironheart’s alter ego is Riri Williams, a genius inventor who creates an advanced suit of armour (similar to Iron Man). Played by Dominique Thorne, Riri takes on the mantle of Ironheart after she builds her own suit of armor. In the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever trailer, she is seen requesting assistance from Wakanda and its powerful extraterrestrial element, Vibranium, in order to build one of the most advanced suits in the universe.

Captain America: New World Order (2024)

Marvel Studios

One of the biggest reveals of the SDCC Marvel Panel Announcements was that the new Captain America sequel has been officially titled New World Order and will be hitting our screens in May 2024. Having officially taken on the mantle of Captain America in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) will reprise his role in the fourth Captain America film.

(Anthony Mackie) will reprise his role in the fourth Captain America film.

Daredevil: Born Again (2024)

Marvel Studios

During the presentation, Kevin Feige announced that Marvel Studios’ ‘Daredevil: Born Again will be coming to Disney+ in Spring 2024. It seemed like there was only a matter of time until a new series of Daredevil arrived at our doorstep, as we were introduced to Matt Murdock (aka Daredevil) in Spider-Man No Way Home.

Long after Netflix canceled Cox’s run as the savior of Hell’s Kitchen, Disney Plus is bringing him back for a series that will be much longer than what we normally get. An 18-part series titled Daredevil: Born Again will be released in Spring 2024, returning with Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock and Vincent D’Onofrio as Kingpin.

Nothing has been revealed of Born Again’s storyline but we do know that the series is a standalone sequel to Daredevil and a direct sequel to Echo.

Thunderbolts (2024)

One surprise announcement from the SDCC Marvel Panel is Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts, which will mark the end of Phase Five. Not much information has been released about the upcoming film, but Feige’s presentation hinted at the direction the narrative will take.

The movie is expected to include characters that haven’t been introduced into the MCU. In the comics, the original Thunderbolts team are revealed to be the supervillain group the Masters of Evil, which include Citizen V (Baron Zemo), Techno (Fixer), Mach-1 (Beetle), Songbird (Screaming Mimi), Atlas (Goliath), and Meteorite (Moonstone).

Phase Six

Fantastic Four (2024)

Marvel Studios

Marvel Studios

We got to see a look into the far future of Marvel at San Diego Comic-Con with a glimpse into Phase Six, which will kick off with Fantastic Four releasing in November 2024. As you can imagine, this has been a long-awaited announcement that many diehard fans have wanted to see since its rumours back in 2019.

In Doctor Strange: Multiverse Of Madness (2022), we got to see John Krasinski portray Reed Richards (aka Mister Fantastic). This will hopefully mean that we will eventually see more of the Fantastic Four soon.

The Avengers

Marvel Studios

By far one of the biggest announcements of SDCC was the two Avengers movies releasing in 2025 within just five months of each other. These will be titled Avengers: Kang’s Dynasty on May 2, 2025 and Avengers: Secret Wars on November 7, 2025.

Many of the fans believed that we were heading towards an Avengers: Secret Wars ever since Loki dropped in 2021, but the big surprise was the second announcement Kang’s Dynasty, which we are guessing will follow the supervillain build his legacy and become the ultimate time-travelling warlord in the Multiverse.
